British Royal Navy confronts Spanish vessel in Gibraltar
Two Gibraltar-based British Royal Navy ships, the HMS Dasher and the Royal Navy RHIB, were both dispatched after entering the Bay of Gibraltar to confront the Spanish ship, Rio Guadalete.
The Navy ships gave her repeated sovereignty alerts to reach the waters of the United Kingdom, and the vessel was escorted out of the waters of the territory after 45 minutes.
It is not clear why the Spanish ship would enter the waters of the United Kingdom, although apparently it does occur on a regular basis, and the Ministry of Defence did not make any comment on the incident.
Following the Brexit, Gibraltar became part of the Schengen zone, allowing freedom of travel between EU states, and while Gibraltar is still a British Overseas Territory, it now has to comply with EU laws, but Spain has again made a territorial claim to the Rock during the Brexit talks.
