American Waterways Operators becomes new Green Marine member

In order to advance environmental stewardship in the US tugboat, towboat and barge industry, the American Waterways Operators (AWO) joined Green Marine as an association member.

“This partnership will provide AWO more tools and resources to share with our members and help them excel in a world of evolving environmental expectations,” stated Jennifer A. Carpenter, AWO President & CEO.

AWO is a US-based advocate for the local tugboat, towboat and barge industry.

Although AWO is a new Green Marine member, for years the two have been collaborating. Dr. Eleanor Kirtley, Senior Program Manager of Green Marine, has been part of the Environmental Stewardship Working Group of AWO since its inception.

In key environmental areas such as air and water quality, waste management, energy efficiency and corporate responsibility, the working group is surveying solutions to advance the environmental performance of the tugboat, towboat and barge industry. These same issues are at the core of the voluntary environmental certification program for Green Marine.

Founded in 2007, the North American environmental certification program for Green Marine is the result of the shipping industry's voluntary effort to go beyond regulations.

When Integrated Logistics, a network of terminals providing cargo handling and stevedoring services in Newfoundland and Labrador, became the program's participant, Green Marine welcomed another member earlier this week.v
