SHI won approval in design featuring infectious disease prevention solutions
South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has received approval for the design of ships equipped with technology to prevent the spread of infectious diseases during the service of ships.
The design is critical because it takes into consideration how COVID-19 has influenced the lives of seafarers at sea.
In particular, because of the pandemic, seafarers have been advised to socially isolate themselves and remain in their quarters to prevent the possible spread of the virus while completing their work.
As they are cautioned against socializing, this has impacted their social life and mental health, especially taking into account the extended times at sea they have had to experience due to the crew shift crisis.
SHI said that it won an AIP for the infectious disease mitigation arrangement (IDM-A) notation from the US-based classification society ABS.
In general, the design of the ship has an isolation position that can sustain negative pressure, separate medical assistance and laundry facilities. In addition, the design is characterized by better use of space, with all anti-epidemic facilities in the same location as an actual vessel in the cabin.
