Fish factory ship catches fire in Pacific, 363 people evacuated

The Russian-flagged giant fish processor ship Piotr Zhitnikov caught fire in a location which is close to the island of Shikotan, Japan.

According to reports, There were 412 people on board, factory workers and crew, fire erupted in fish equipment compartment. The evacuation of 363 members had been made immediately. 53 other crew members remained on board to fight the fire, according to reports of the marine rescue center in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. 

Fish package material caught fire, common cause of major fire on board of fish processing ships. 

Helicopter evacuation was reportedly not available due to weather conditions, but the factory ship Vsevolod Sibirtsev was operating in the area and arrived shortly to assist. The Sibirtsev and other vessels helped to evacuate the crewmembers and accommodate them. 

According to latest reports, fire is under control, fore superstructure blackouted, the ship being disabled. No injuries were reported.

The shipowner stated that smoldering continues.
