Prime Minister of Lebanon charged in deadly port blast
Lebanon's lead prosecutor charged outgoing Prime Minister Hassan Diab and three former ministers with negligence in the huge port explosion that rocked Beirut on August 4.
In the first such official prosecution against a prime minister in office in Lebanese history, the four were charged with negligence and causing hundreds to die and thousands more to be injured."
Top security officials emerged after the explosion and politicians had known for years about hundreds of tons of ammonium nitrate fertiliser that had been improperly stored in the port.
An explosion was caused by ammonium nitrate, killing over 200 people and injuring thousands.
The enormous explosion left a crater 43 m deep where the warehouse used to exist that contained the hazardous chemical.
Insurers are bracing for a Beirut port blast bill equivalent to the $3bn hit they received five years ago in the aftermath of the Tianjin Port explosions.
