Carnival Cruise Line to sell 18 vessels

Previously, the world's largest cruise operator said it would exit its fleet by 13 ships, the figure was increased to 18, eight of which had already left the fleet.

"In total, the 18 ships represent approximately 12 percent of pre-pause capacity and only three percent of operating income in 2019. The sale of less efficient ships will result in future operating expense efficiencies of approximately two percent per available lower berth day and a reduction in fuel consumption of approximately one percent per ALBD," Carnival announced.

Based on the steps taken to date and the expected newbuild deliveries through 2022, the company's fleet would be more effective with an average berth size of approximately 13 per cent and an average age of 12 years in 2022 versus 13 years, in each case compared to 2019.

The latest ship exits include the Rotterdam and Amsterdam which were sold to Holland America Line's Fred Olsen Cruise Lines.
