Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has recently won a two-trillion-won order for six LNG carriers from an unknown European client.

A European client put the new order, which is priced at 2.03 trillion won. It is the largest single order for the Korean shipbuilding industry in 2020.

The order increased the cumulative order achievement rate of DSME from 21% (US$ 1.5 billion) to 46% (US$ 3.3 billion).

In terms of order goal accomplishment ratio, the order also allowed DSME to rank first among major Korean shipbuilders, ahead of Hyundai Heavy Industries Group (Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard) with 29% and Samsung Heavy Industries with 12%.

DSME did not reveal the contract specifics, but industry watchers say the high contract value means that the company has received an order from Russia for icebreaking LNG carriers.

At the end of 2020, Korean shipbuilders expect to receive significant orders. More than 20 ice-breaking LNG carriers are expected to be ordered by Russia. Korean shipbuilders are waiting for Russia to receive additional orders.

The French energy company Total will order 16 ships to carry LNG generated at Mozambique gas field. A strong candidate for the project is considered to be Korean shipbuilders.
