UNIFIL naval peacekeepers injured in Beirut Port blast

A series of two massive explosions in the port of Beirut , Lebanon, caused significant damage Tuesday, destroying several buildings and damaging vessels.

The UNIFIL maritime task force ship, which was docked in the port of Beirut, was destroyed and several UNIFIL naval peacekeepers were wounded, some of them seriously, in a major explosion in the Lebanese capital, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon said in a statement on Tuesday.

“UNIFIL is transporting the injured peacekeepers to the nearest hospitals for medical treatment,” the statement said.

UNIFIL is currently evaluating the situation, including the size of the effects on UNIFIL personnel, and is ready to provide assistance and help to the Government of Lebanon, the statement added.
