Samsung receives order for five LNG-powered container ships

Samsung Heavy Industries has secured a new order for five more ships from an unidentified Asian customer, cementing its place as the world's leading builder of environmentally friendly vessels fuelled by liquefied natural gas.

With the new contract, the shipbuilder has received $2.4 billion in orders for 19 vessels, accounting for 31% of the $7.8 billion target for this year.

In a regulatory filing on March 9, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) reported that it had won a contract worth 794.2 billion won ($694.8 million) to build five 15,000-TEU container ships with LNG propulsion, which will be delivered in January 2024.

SHI had 36 LNG-powered ship orders on the books, accounting for 31% of the global market.

“Efforts to develop technologies such as strengthening engineering capabilities related to LNG and establishing demonstration facilities are paying off,” the company stated.

The shipbuilder credited its performance to its superior construction technology and LNG propulsion ship expertise, citing rising demand for environmentally sustainable ships to meet global economic recovery and environmental regulations.
