According to an Indian Navy statement, the ship was commissioned in the presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and Admiral (Retired) VS Shekhawat, who was the Commanding Officer of the previous INS Karanj during the 1971 India-Pakistan War.
The Indian Navy has already received two of the class's submarines, the INS Kalvari and INS Khanderi.
The diesel-electric attack submarines were designed by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in collaboration with the French Naval Group as part of Project-75.
The MDL will produce a total of six submarines. In 2005, India placed an order for Scorpene-class submarines.
Both the fourth submarine, Vela, and the fifth submarine, Vagir, were deployed into the water in May 2019 and are currently undergoing sea trials. Vagsheer, the sixth, is nearing completion of its outfitting.
