India is considering new law for ship-recycling with global standards

India has announced that they may adopt Hong Kong convention for green ship recycling.

Green shipping is about cleaner practices on the emission control, port management and equipment lifecycles. Ships are now also required to manage their ballast water according to D-1 and D-2 standards which require them to exchange and release at least 95% of ballast water.

The Marine Environment Protection Committee  addressed the issue of marine plastic litter from shipping in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals and asked for a significant reduction in marine pollution of all kinds.

Available data showed that in 2018, India handled about 5.000.000 gross tonnage  annually, which is nearly 25% share of the world’s ship recycling industry.

A govrnment officer stated that “We plan to introduce a new law on ship recycling, in tune with the Hong Kong Convention on ship-recycling.”

The move will help India double its ship-recycling capacity over the next five years.
