German energy firm Uniper to work on green methanol marine fuel

Uniper, a German energy group, has joined forces with Liberty Pier Maritime Projects, a shipping company, and engineering firm Ship Design & Consultto to grow green methanol as a renewable and carbon-neutral marine fuel.

Green methanol, according to Uniper, is a feasible decarbonization choice for both European coastal and foreign deep sea shipping. It's also suitable for specialized applications like cruise ships and inland navigation.

The three companies have established the Green Methanol Cooperation (GMC), an open collaboration that will build the infrastructure and logistics system required to supply methanol in Europe as well as establish the necessary shipping requirements.

The GMC's medium-term target is to develop ships that can operate on green methanol, with an initial emphasis on European shipping using ships with load capacities of 5,300 and 8,300 tons, as well as container feeders.

The companies have committed to working together in a fully digitalized and open manner.
