Bureau Veritas awards research vessel Jákup Sverri

The Bureau Veritas certification body has granted classification to the Jákup Sverri research vessel, whose primary task will be to perform surveys in and around the Faroe Islands.

The 54-meter-long Jákup Sverri vessel, constructed at the Faroe MEST Shipyard, will perform work for the Faroe Marine Research Institute.

The vessel is fitted with the new advanced and fully automated oceanographic and fishing research equipment, including pelagic and bottom trawling, acoustic underwater research, hydrographic, seismic, ROV, and plankton and bottom sampling operations.

The vessel, which has four scientific laboratories, has also been fitted with a dynamic positioning (DP) system to support its wide-ranging operating profile and is designed for service in ice and cold climates.

From its early design stages, Bureau Veritas was involved with the project, with the vessel's characteristic RV5414 design built by MEST Shipyard in-house.

Bureau Veritas specialists have been able to provide technical and regulatory advice in close collaboration with MEST Shipyard to help ensure compliance with the relevant class rules and legislative regulations.

The Nordic Plan Approval Office in Copenhagen, which is entirely accredited for new construction projects, has coordinated the design review process.

“A real stand-out feature is that the vessel is among the quietest ships ever built to facilitate marine research activities as confirmed by underwater noise measurements. This is primarily achieved by diesel-electric propulsion with elastically mounted diesel generators and an electrically driven five blade ultra-silent propeller. During sea trials, the ship has proven to have excellent seakeeping characteristics to the satisfaction of the owner and crew," Gijsbert de Jong, recently appointed Marine Chief Executive for Bureau Veritas’ Nordic region.

Key Bureau Veritas class notes applicable to Jákup Sverri include URN-specified vessels covering underwater radiated noise specific criteria for operations of the vessel, DYNAPOS SAM covering DP semi-automatic operation requirements, and POLAR CAT C meeting IMO Polar Code requirements for category C vessels.
