ABS offers Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) survey

ABS is offering IHM remote survey to benefit customers before 31 December 2020, the start of compulsory IHM for all vessels sailing under the flag of EU Member States or any vessel calling at a European port.

“In this challenging, time-pressured environment, ABS IHM remote survey is the simplest route to compliance without the inconvenience of arranging for a surveyor to be physically present on board,” stated John McDonlad, ABS Senior Vice President, Global Business Development.

An initial IHM survey for vessels verifies where the hazardous materials on board that are listed in the inventory are located. First step is to forward the inventory and documents required to an ABS engineering office. ABS-classified and non-ABS-classified vessels are eligible for an initial IHM assessment, endorsing compliance with both the criteria for EU ship recycling and the Hong Kong IMO Convention.

Such new solutions are the next step in greatly extending the capabilities of ABS remote surveying. ABS is now able to perform almost all annual classification surveys remotely on qualifying vessels and has made its online survey and audit services accessible to customers from all over the globe who supply equipment and materials.

In addition, ABS will extend Underwater Inspections In-Lieu of Drydocking (UWILD) to navy vessels next week.
